Dixie Gas & Oil Corporation was founded June 16, 1946 as Dixie Bottle Gas Corporation. Dennis Earhart, along with his brother Edwin and father Roy, began the company purchasing about 100 propane customers from the HUB Furniture Company. At that time propane was delivered in 100 pound cylinders, every one to two months, and the empty tanks were exchanged and taken to a gas company in Maryland to be refilled. Propane was used primarily for cooking, water heating, and refrigeration.
The 1950s were quite busy for us. In 1951, we opened our own propane bulk storage and refilling facility in Verona . In 1952 we opened our first branch in Lexington , and in 1953, we were the first company in the area to offer bulk propane delivery. In addition to propane, Dixie was also known for selling major household appliances, and we had appliance showrooms in Staunton and Waynesboro. In 1956, we opened a third location in Franklin , West Virginia ; and in 1958 we moved our Staunton office to Verona , where our present office is located. In order to offer our customers a full range of home heating products, Dixie Gas also began delivering home heating oil in the mid 1950s.
In 1962 petroleum operations really took off and we expanded our petroleum products to include gasoline and motor oil. As a jobber for Mobil, we were able to provide gasoline and motor oils to local service stations, businesses, and farms throughout the Valley.
In the 1970s we began converting several of our service stations into convenience stores, so that we could offer our customers a greater variety of products and services. Our new stores sold Gulf petroleum products and provided patrons with a refreshing drink and a snack.
Throughout the 1980s our business continued to grow. In 1984, we purchased Johnson Oil, an Amoco jobbership in Lexington , Virginia . In 1985 we opened a new branch in Moorefield , West Virginia . We also purchased Interchange Oil, a BP jobbership in Staunton , as well as Carl Riddlebarger Oil in Waynesboro .
The 1990s brought about even more change and diversity to Dixie . In 1992, we added Subway franchises to six of our convenience stores. We also expanded our Lexington branch to serve even more of the Rockbridge area. Chris Earhart, Dennis son, also became president.
Numerous changes have occurred in the past few years. Dixie Gas & Oil no longer sell appliances, nor has branches in West Virginia , however, one thing will always stay the same: we will always be committed to supplying our customers with quality products and services.
Today we have three offices. Our corporate office and showroom is still located in Verona , and we have a new office and showroom in Lexington . Our merger with Alleghany Oil Company in 2005 has also given us an office and bulk plant location in Covington . Now we are able to serve ALL of our customers more efficiently as well as offer service to the folks of Alleghany, Bath and Highland . Our showrooms in Verona and Lexington feature a great selection of live-burning fireplaces and heaters, as well as an extensive line of premier gas grills.
In addition to our propane and petroleum products, we also provide local industry with bulk and packaged commercial and food grade lubricants from Citgo and Castrol, as well as our own brand Suprotek Advantage. We also supply a number of area retailers with fuel from BP and Pure.
We have also been busy renovating and expanding our convenience stores and Subway restaurants. Each store offers BP fuels, Subway subs and salads, as well as convenience food items.
We look forward to serving each of our customers as we embark on a new chapter in our history. It is the tremendous support of our customers that has enabled us to come this far. Our goal has and always will be to treat you as we would like to be treated. That means that we will always offer our customers the best products, the best pricing, and the best service possible, so you will always be comfortable. |
